About this item

Stars And The Moon - Live At the Donmar by Betty Buckley

"Betty Buckley does give us the "stars and the moon" in this live 2000 recording from the Donmar Warehouse in London. With intimate arrangements by her longtime collaborator and musical director, Kenny Werner, and superlative musicianship, she truly gives us "new ways to dream" with this album.
Songs run the gamut from Sondheim to Fields to Taylor and newer composers, such as Jason Robert Brown and Adam Guettel. The songs are really like a song cycle of love, yearning, and learning. Opening with Sondheim's "Not A Day Goes By" and segue-waying into "Just The Way You Look Tonight", she creates her palate and paints her way musically through the journey of a woman working through life and love.
Ms. Buckley sings in a more intimate style, very subdued with her vocalizing and phrasing. It's truly a delight to hear such artistry at work. She's famous for taking a lyric and giving it such meaning and life. Jason Robert Brown's "Stars and the Moon" gets a reading that is almost cynical, yet vulnerable. My personal favorite is the "Poet's Medley", which utilizes works by Dorothy Parker, Edna Vincent Millay, and Emily Dickinson. The music is by contemporary composer Ricky Ian Gordon. The combining of the poetry, the music, and Buckley's interpretation is a winning moment. And her rendering of "Amazing Grace" is so poignant.
Once again, Ms. Buckley has another wonderful album in her discography. Like Ms. Buckley, the album is class.... pure class!!"
